Avatar,' 'Hurt Locker' lead BAFTA nominations

Avatar,' 'Hurt Locker' lead BAFTA nominations, Sandra Bullock left out
"Avatar" and "The Hurt Locker" lead the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations with eight each.

Sci-Fi film "District 9" garnered seven nominations, including one for Best Director, which is something we are unlikely to see from the Academy Awards.

"District 9" may get a Best Picture nomination now that the field has been expanded to 10 films, but we would be surprised to see it get a Best Director nomination.

Notable omissions include Helen Mirren for "The Last Station," Emily Blunt for "The Young Victoria" and Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side," all of which have been lauded on this side of the pond. In fact, Bullock won both the Critics Choice Award (tied with Meryl Streep) and the Golden Globe, making her an Oscar favorite.

It's nice to see Jeremy Renner nominated for "The Hurt Locker." He was not nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor, though he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award, and has everyone wondering if he'll be nominated for an Oscar.

Man with the Golden Arm (1955) - B&W - 120 min

Frank Sinatra is Frankie Machine - a recovering heroin addict, married to a crippled woman who encourages him to deal cards with his “golden“ arm. Meanwhile, he's in love with another woman (Kim Novak). Lots of really cool period jazz music - though old blues eyes doesn't sing, he does play some terrible drums, especially when he's jones-ing in a cold turkey spasm. Also of note is Elmer Bernstein's really cool jazzy music, which helps drive the film's emotional rollercoaster.
